Skin cancer like any other cancers in our body start from one abnormal cell that over time loses its ability to be controlled. We are always making abnormal cells however, the majority of these are recognised by our immune system and removed before they have a chance to multiply. Anything that we can do to strengthen our immune system will help us to keep control of these abnormal cells and therefore keep us free of cancer.
1. The first and most important advice is to be happy. Pursue things that bring peace to your inner being.
2. Excessive amounts of anything have the potential to cause damage so avoid excess. eg sun exposure, alcohol etc.
3. Exercise is well known to be beneficial to our immune system so do it regularly.
4. The benefits of a good diet are becoming more widely recognised and it appears that it has a much greater benefit than previously thought. Recent data has suggested that Vitamin B3 (Nicotinamide) has a beneficial effect on reducing skin cancers. The foods containing the most Nicotinamide are: wholegrain cereals, meat, milk, eggs, mushrooms & green vegetables. Eating these foods regularly is the best way to get your Nicotinamide requirements. The normal daily requirements of Nicotinamide is around 20 mgm per day.
A recent study using 1000 mgm of Nicotinamide daily was found to reduce the incidence of skin cancers by around 30%. http://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa1506197
